This application was developed for a client that needed a solution offering CAD/CAM capabilities with a user interface that is extremely efficient and optimized for rapid data entry.  

Knight Software wrote this countertop design application to meet those needs.

Bridging CAD/CAM with Data Entry

Traditional CAD/CAM systems are graphical design systems and offer mouse driven user interfaces.  Mouse driving user interfaces provide efficient selection of graphic data and navigation of the user interface.  The very things that make CAD/CAM systems great for design work, make them very slow for Data Entry.  

CAD/CAM systems typically store each part in a separate file which makes modifications of many different parts at the same time difficult or impossible.

Typical Data Entry systems provide Data Entry forms that allow a user to tab through fields extremely efficiently to view and enter data.  When entering the same types of information repeatedly, these forms provide the maximum possible speed for Data Entry and review, short of automation.  These forms typically don't provide a graphical representation of the data being entered.

Countertop Designer bridges CAD/CAM systems and Data Entry systems by providing the best of both worlds.  

Data Entry in Countertop Designer  is performed at the speed of the most efficient Data Entry systems since it does not require using the mouse or navigating menus for standard Data Entry.  Entry of almost any model can be achieved without the user's hands leaving the keyboard.

Data Entry speed is further improved by all updates to the database being asynchronous.  This means that while the previous model entered is being written to the database, the user can start entering the next model.  There is no unnecessary waiting for the model to be written to or modified in the database.

Like modern CAD/CAM systems, the user can use the mouse to select any dimension to modify.  The modification will update the entire model parametrically so modifying one parameter will update the entire part instantly.  

The user can also select any entity with the mouse.  The system will automatically bring up the tool used for modifying that entity and the dimensions that can be modified for that entity.

The information entered in Countertop Designer  drives the entire manufacturing process and financial systems.  This is done with automated model analysis tools such as an NC generator and an invoice line item generator.
